She worked hard with nurses to advocate for the bill every step of the way, from successful committee hearings to its passage on the House floor.

She also listened to nurses and fought until the end to retain the staffing provisions in conference committee with the Minnesota Senate.

She was a co-author on MNA’s Workplace Violence Prevention bill during the 2018-2019 biennium and was in support of and voted for both Frontline Worker Pay and the Keeping Nurses at the Bedside Act.

Nurses endorsed Michael Nelson for House District 38A because, as a longtime union carpenter and local officer in his union who was raised by a nurse, he believes it is in unions’ best interest to be involved in the political process.   

Nurses also appreciated that in this past session, he carried the bill to re-establish funding for the Public Employees Relations Board (PERB) and voted for both Frontline Worker Pay and the Keeping Nurses at the Beside Act.

Nurses endorsed Cedrick Frazier for House District 43A because his tireless partnership with MNA nurses on the Essential Worker Emergency Leave Act, which became Frontline Worker Bonus Pay, led MNA to grant him the Public Official Award in 2021.

After a two-year fight, frontline pay passed thanks in large part to the strong partnership of nurses with Rep. Frazier.

Nurses endorsed Mike Freiberg for House District 43B because he is a co-author of the Keeping Nurses at the Bedside Act and voted no – twice – on the amendment to strip out the staffing committees from KNABA as a Health Committee member and on the House floor.  

Nurses also appreciate that he is a strong advocate for workers and their right to unionize.

Nurses endorsed union member Leon Lillie for House District 44B because he  served as author of the bill to approve state employee contracts for thousands of workers, including the hundreds of MNA nurses who work for the State of Minnesota.

Due to his hard work, MNA nurse contacts were approved with bipartisan support before the end of the legislative session.

Patty Acomb

Nurses endorsed Patty Acomb for House District 44B because she expressed her willingness to work with nurses to pressure the hospitals during the current contract fight. She said she would picket, attend a press conference, make phone calls, and pass legislation to codify ratios into law.

She also supported the Keeping Nurses at the Bedside Act in the legislature this year and committed to continue doing so.

Nurses endorsed Larry Kraft for House District 46A because they appreciated his conviction that nurses, as the experts at the bedside, must be at the table when staffing levels and safe patient assignments are decided.

As the son of a retired nurse, he also demonstrated a clear understanding and commitment to key MNA priorities.

Nurses endorsed Cheryl Youakim for House District 46B because she co-authored the Frontline Worker Pay bill and the extension of worker compensation presumptive eligibility for nurses and other frontline workers affected by COVID.

Nurses also appreciated that she updated her position on staffing after meeting with nurses in her district and listening to nurses voices on the issue, which led to her voting in favor of the Keeping Nurses at the Bedside Act.

Nurses endorsed Mike Howard for House District 51A because he is a strong supporter of MNA nurses on issues of staffing and healthcare reform and has been a powerful advocate for prescription drug price reform in the Minnesota House.

MNA nurses, working in coalition with other union members, worked with Howard to pass the Alex Smith Emergency Insulin Bill two years ago.
